Minor attracted persons, or MAPs, are a group of individuals who experience sexual attraction to underage children. They have recently pushed for pro-pedophilia laws, seeking legal protection against any violence that they might incur for their beliefs.

This movement is obviously morally and legally flawed, as it normalizes pedophilia, diminishes the trauma and negative outcomes that a child would face in the event of pedophilia and compares pedophilia to same-sex attraction.

The term “MAPs” is used as an alternative for “pedophile” to present pedophiles as an oppressed sexual minority. The comparison between pedophiles and LGBTQ+ individuals undermines the civil rights of LGBTQ+ people and the many years of hard work put in to receive justice and equal protections under the law.

Ally Kotetsu, a Seattle-based radqueer advocate, describes herself as a minor-attracted person and writes about her experience on her blog post titled, “My Experience: Being a MAP/GL.” In this pseudo-language, GL stands for girl-lover, meaning that she is attracted to young girls. Additionally, Ally also describes herself as “transrace,” meaning she identifies as part Japanese despite being Caucasian.

Her experience with pedophilia began as a teenager, with Ally reporting that she initially brushed off her attraction to children, but still could not get rid of the sexual feelings she experienced, “Eventually I decided that I was done pretending to be someone I wasn’t; whether I liked it or not, I was attracted to children, and instead of suppressing this side of me, I should explore it.”

She believes that attraction to children is the same as attraction to adults, and that pedophilia is not child abuse, but rather just a natural human instinct. Reading her blog was sickening, and as she continued to talk about how she's attracted to young men who fit the “pretty boy” type and about her attraction to girls from ages 8-60, I felt a deep sense of foreboding and disgust.

“So, no, my attraction to youth is not some fetish or disorder,” Kotetsu said, “I am simply someone who experiences attraction just like any other adult, but where age is less of a factor.”

“I am simply someone who experiences attraction just like any other adult, but where age is less of a factor.”

There are many dangers to this ideology, and it's not just Kotetsu, there are groups of people who believe pedophilia is acceptable and that they should be protected by our judicial system. It urges me to ask: How has our society gotten to this point and why are people so comfortable with the idea of abusing and exploiting children?

Factors that contribute to the propagation of this ideology are loneliness, social media and the global pandemic that has caused us to isolate ourselves from one another. To overcome loneliness and isolation, individuals seek people who understand and accept them. Everyone wants a place where they feel included, and they believe they are entitled to legal and social rights.

I was recently introduced to a concept centered on “overly woke” people. “Woke” generally means that a person is aware of current situations or genuinely cares for individual rights. The idea of “overly woke” is that people become so extreme with their opinions that they end up being extremely controversial and just absurd. This seems to be an example of this concept. MAPs believe they are a sexual minority and they believe they should receive rights just like LGBTQ individuals. Leading them to advertise the idea that it is acceptable to have sexual feelings for children, abuse children and illegally commit sexual acts with minors.
